H&A 264/43

The Honours and Awards Committee has considered the services of Lieutenant-Commander (E) A L Howard DSC. RNR. Of HMS Glenroy and submits that the King be asked to approve the award set forth below

Lieutenant-Commander Howard showed very high professional skill and great determination and enterprise during the voyage from Alexandria to the United Kingdom on one engine, after temporary repairs made to the damage done when his ship was torpedoed. A piston fractured after leaving Bathurst and the piston broke up the cylinder head. The ship was taken in tow but twelve hours work dismantled the cylinder and the ship was able to proceed on the remaining five cylinders.
