GLENROY

CONFIDENTIAL

TORPEDOING AND SUBSEQUENT REPAIRS

From ...

TBE COMMANDING OFFICER HMS GLENROY

20th November 1943

TIHE REAR ADNIERAX ALEX~RIA

The attached narrative of torpedoing (23d November 1941) and subsequent repairs of Glenroy is submitted for forwarding to the Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean Station as being of interest for the following reasons -
          (a) Ship was beached for three nights off Mersa Matruth (Glenroys letter of proceedings 23d November - 4h Deceniber 194 1)
          (b) First occasion when a steel patch of large dimensions has ever been fitted underwater @ ,y divers with the ship afloat (Fleet Salvage Officers letter
170114 of 20 May 1942 to Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean and Med 206614271313 of 274b May 1942 to Admiralty) Work was done by a small party of divers assisted by Ships Company.
          (c) After being submerged for four months the large Main Diesel Engines were dismantled and reconditioned on board by the ships staff. An unprecedented task. Starboard engine was made serviceable in six months

2 Glenroy was to have been drydocked on 19'h December 1941 but @other commitments arose which made the dry dock unavailable and also occupied the major resources of the yard for a long period.

3

1 consider the undermentioned officers deserve special credit for what has been done. In the case of Glenroys Officers 1 submit that they be considered for awards. It is also wished to include Mr Taylor though it has not been -possible to refer his recommendation through Commander Wheeler who has left the station.
